Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival – A Unique Cultural Tradition of the Coastal People of Hai Phong.
Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival is a special event that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people, held annually on the 9th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar in Do Son, Hai Phong. This festival, deeply connected to the legends of “Điểm Tước Đại Vương” and “Bà Đế” Temple, is a traditional celebration of the coastal inhabitants. It represents their deep faith and devotion to the gods, as they pray for a bountiful harvest and favorable weather.
The festival is divided into two main parts: the ceremonial portion and the entertainment portion. The ceremonial part includes solemn rituals such as offerings to the gods and processions involving the buffaloes, where each buffalo is seen as a spiritual symbol of the village. In the entertainment part, fierce and exciting buffalo fights take place, attracting many locals and tourists alike. The buffaloes are carefully trained, and a victory brings great honor to the village.
In addition to its cultural and spiritual significance, Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival has also become a major tourism event, drawing tens of thousands of visitors from across the country and abroad, and helping to promote the image of Hai Phong.
In 2024, due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3 (Typhoon Yagi), the festival has been postponed to September 21. The organizers will distribute free admission tickets to 18,000 attendees. The ceremony will take place on the morning of September 21st at Đồ Sơn District Central Stadium. If you have the time, don't miss this unique and vibrant festival in Hai Phong!
